We had another great battle with our neighbours the Shamrocks in the
semi-final replay of the Western Junior Football Championship in
Dungarvan last Saturday. Again both teams were evenly matched with never
more than a few points separating them until a strong Tallow finish led
to Michael Curley's fine point in injury time to snatch victory for
Tallow. Kieran Geary had our first point
after seven minutes which was quickly followed up by a Michael Curley
free. Shamrocks then struck for a goal on ten minutes which seemed to
settle them and they soon added a free of their own.
Michael Curley showed his usual class from the dead ball with two frees
over the next five minutes to leave the teams level after twenty
minutes. Both teams traded points coming up to half time and another
Shamrocks point left them ahead coming towards the end of the half.
However the final act of the half saw a Michael Curley free drop short
only to be finished to the net by Stuart Barry for a Tallow goal that
left us two in front at the break, 1-5 to 1-3. The second
half was a half of two halves as Shamrocks dominated the third quarter,
registering a goal and two points to storm into a three point lead. It
took a while for Tallow to gain a foothold in Shamrock territory but
with Mark O Brien's accurate foot passing on the left wing being vital
we clawed our way back into contention. A Michael Curley free at the
three quarter stage was the start of the comeback and the same player
pointed from play with ten minutes left to
leave the minimum between the teams. With five minutes left, a superb
45 against the wind was converted by Mikey again and the game was up for
grabs. Both teams had chances to win but in injury time a long delivery
from a JP Grey free broke down into Michael Curley's arms and he made
no mistake with the winner. Team: JP Grey, E Hickey, B Henley,
